Eating Disorders Treatment Symptoms of Eating Disorders: excessive weight loss through self-starvation and sometimes through purging (vomiting, laxative usage), excessive exercising, refusal to maintain normal weight, intense fear of weight gain, obsessive preoccupation with weight and shape, loss of menstrual periods, distorted body image; Bulimia Nervosa - cycles of binge eating followed by purging, usually done in secret, weight ranges from below to above average (may be difficult to detect), feeling out of control of food intake, purging after bingeing via self-induced vomiting, laxatives, diet pills, diuretics, excessive exercise, or starvation, obsessive preoccupation with weight and shape. Out-of-home care may become a necessary part of anorexia treatment (or bulimia treatment). The need for intervention through anorexia treatment should not be underestimated. Anorexia treatment can save the life and long-term health of a troubled teen. Taking a potential eating disorder seriously is critical. Remember, proper intervention through anorexia treatment, bulimia treatment, etc., even if it requires out-of-home care reflects a choice and plan that could save your child's life. You should seek help to assist with proper intervention if you suspect your troubled teen is struggling with an eating disorder.
It is often necessary to place teens with eating disorders in a therapeutic boarding school setting. We have information on many treatment centers that have had success in treating eating disorders. Contact us so that we can find the right setting for your child. |
